While practicing gratitude is powerful, it's sometimes reduced to a simple exercise we're told to do. Gratitude is nice in general, but what does it mean to truly appreciate what you have?

Think about the last time you felt deeply, genuinely grateful. Chances are, it wasn't when you were writing in your gratitude journal. Maybe it was during an ordinary morning, sipping matcha in your living room.

For me, the sight of a sunset always fills me with gratitude. I watch in awe, thinking this is what makes life so worthwhile.

Real gratitude isn't just about listing what's good in our lives. To be truly grateful, we must develop a deeper relationship with all of our experiences, big and small.

You learn to appreciate the richness of everyday moments as opposed to passing them by in a hurry.

Today, driving through Thanksgiving traffic, I witnessed something that shifted my perspective.

What started as a typical traffic delay – you know, the kind that usually triggers everyone's sighs and impatient glances – turned out to be much more.

As I merged into the single open lane along with other cars, I caught sight of something that made my heart heavy: an officer performing CPR in broad daylight, right there on the busy freeway.

Some people stood outside their parked cars while others watched from their vehicles. Despite not knowing exactly what happened, witnessing this scene – especially on Thanksgiving Day – hit me like a ton of bricks. It was an eye-opening reminder of life's incredible fragility.

There is no doubt that we all carry different burdens and face different challenges in life. Every one of these struggles is valid.

But sometimes, life presents us with moments that pull us out of our everyday routines and remind us of a deeper truth: that every breath, every ordinary Tuesday, every mundane morning is actually extraordinary in its own way.

What if, instead of forcing ourselves to feel grateful, we learned to develop awareness that naturally leads to appreciation?

What if gratitude became less about what we should feel thankful for, and more about noticing what already moves us?

It's important not to view gratitude as just another item on our checklist, but as a lens through which to see our lives.

It may be better to ask the question "What moments am I truly present for?" instead of "What am I grateful for?" When we are present, we are naturally grateful.
